How Many Container Houses Fit in a 40HQ? A Practical Shipping Guide

40hq container house export loading

When we prepare an export quotation for a flat pack container house project, shipping quantity is usually one of the first questions from the buyer.

For Hongtai’s standard 3 × 6 m flat pack container house, one 40HQ can normally load approximately 18 sets.

We use 18 sets as a practical planning figure. The final container quantity is confirmed after checking the actual doors, windows, bathrooms, electrical materials, stairs and other items included in the order.

Quick Answer A standard 40HQ can normally carry about 18 sets of Hongtai’s 3 × 6 m flat pack container houses under a standard configuration.

How Many Container Houses Fit in a 40HQ?

Our standard flat pack container house measures approximately 3.0 × 5.95 × 2.8 m after assembly.

For early freight planning, the following figures are a useful reference:

Container Houses Estimated Shipping
18 sets 1 × 40HQ
36 sets 2 × 40HQ
54 sets 3 × 40HQ
90 sets About 5 × 40HQ
180 sets About 10 × 40HQ

These numbers are suitable for estimating freight during the quotation stage. Before containers are booked, the packing list should be checked against the final specification.

Why Flat Pack Container Houses Work Well for Export

A flat pack container house is shipped as a set of structural and building components rather than as a finished 3 × 6 m room.

The frame components, wall panels, roof materials, doors, windows and accessories are arranged inside the shipping container and assembled after arrival at the project site.

This packing method makes better use of the internal space of a 40HQ and reduces the amount of empty room volume being transported.

The photograph above is from an actual loading operation. Large panel bundles are loaded first, while smaller components are arranged around the remaining space.

This becomes important on projects with dozens or hundreds of units. A small difference in loading efficiency can turn into several additional shipping containers across a large order.

Why 18 Sets Is Not a Fixed Number for Every Order

The main structure may be standard, but the materials shipped with each project can be very different.

These are the items we normally check before confirming the final loading quantity.

Doors, Windows and Glass

A standard unit with one door and two windows is straightforward to pack. Larger aluminum windows, double glazing, extra doors or glass curtain wall sections need more protection and additional packing space.

Bathroom Materials

A dormitory supplied with a complete bathroom adds toilets, wash basins, shower fittings, partitions and plumbing materials.

For a small number of bathrooms, the additional components may fit into the available loading space. If most units include bathrooms, the packing plan needs a separate check.

Stairs and Walkways

Two-storey accommodation and office buildings often require external stairs, corridors, railings and canopies. These items are not part of the basic room module and can take a significant amount of space on a larger project.

Electrical and Interior Materials

Lights, switches, sockets and distribution boxes are relatively compact, but flooring, ceiling materials, decorative panels, furniture and other interior items can change the total shipment volume.

Shipping Cost Should Be Checked Together With the House Price

For an overseas project, the factory price is only one part of the total cost.

Factory Price + Packing + Inland Transport + Port Charges + Ocean Freight + Destination Charges + Local Installation

This is why two quotations with a similar unit price may produce very different delivered costs.

If one supplier needs more containers to ship the same number of houses, the freight difference may become more important than a small difference in the factory unit price.

This is especially relevant when the project quantity moves from one container to five, ten or twenty containers.

A Simple Example: Shipping 54 Container Houses

Assume a project requires 54 standard 3 × 6 m flat pack container houses.

Using the normal reference of approximately 18 sets per 40HQ:

54 ÷ 18 = approximately 3 × 40HQ

Three containers would be the first shipping estimate.

Before confirming that figure, we would still review the specification. If the project includes a large number of bathrooms, external stairs, glass panels or additional finishing materials, the final packing arrangement may need more space.

What Information We Need Before Confirming the Loading Plan

The loading calculation becomes much more reliable once the building specification is clear.

We normally confirm:

  • Total number of units
  • Unit size and floor plan
  • Door and window configuration
  • Wall panel thickness
  • Electrical scope
  • Bathroom quantity
  • Stairs, walkways and railings
  • Interior and exterior finishing materials
  • Destination port
A room schedule, BOQ or simple project layout is usually enough for us to make a much better preliminary loading calculation.

Large Camp Projects Need a Different Shipping Plan

A larger camp usually includes more than one type of building.

Worker dormitories may use repeated flat pack units, while offices, kitchens, dining halls, sanitary buildings and activity spaces may require different configurations.

For this type of project, loading should be coordinated with the installation sequence on site.

A shipment may be divided into groups such as:

  • Worker accommodation units
  • Project office modules
  • Bathroom and plumbing materials
  • Stairs and walkway components
  • Prefab building materials
  • Furniture and optional equipment

This makes unloading easier and reduces the chance of site teams opening several containers just to find one group of materials.

You can see how these different building functions are organized on our labor camp solution page.

Does the 18-Set Figure Apply to Expandable Houses?

No single loading number should be applied across different product systems.

The approximately 18-set reference in this article applies to our standard 3 × 6 m flat pack container house.

Expandable houses use a different folded structure and transport size. Fully assembled units and larger customized modular buildings also need separate loading calculations.

FOB or CIF: Which Quotation Is More Useful?

Both are commonly used, but they answer different questions.

An FOB quotation shows the product and export-side cost up to the agreed port of shipment. Buyers who already work with a freight forwarder may prefer this because they can arrange ocean freight themselves.

A CIF quotation includes ocean freight to the destination port, so we need the exact destination before calculating it.

Freight rates change with the route and shipping market. For that reason, current freight should be checked when the shipment is being planned rather than copied from an old quotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many 3 × 6 m flat pack container houses fit in a 40HQ?

For Hongtai’s standard configuration, approximately 18 sets can normally be loaded in one 40HQ. The actual number is confirmed after checking the final specification and packing list.

Can 36 container houses be shipped in two 40HQ containers?

For a standard configuration, two 40HQ containers are a reasonable preliminary estimate for 36 sets. Additional materials may change the final plan.

Will bathrooms reduce the number of houses that fit in a container?

They can. Sanitary fixtures, partitions and plumbing materials take additional space. The effect depends on how many units include bathrooms and what equipment is supplied.

Are flat pack container houses shipped fully assembled?

No. The main structural and building components are packed for transport and assembled at the project site. This is what makes the system more efficient for international shipping.

Can Hongtai prepare a loading plan before shipment?

Yes. Once the quantity and specification are confirmed, we prepare the packing and loading arrangement based on the actual materials included in the order.
